Mutual Relationships

I absolutely love observing the patterns of nature, especially as the seasons shift and new growth and life are abundant. I particularly find the relationships that exist between the plants and insects to be fascinating. The photo shows an ant on a Peony flower in my garden. The relationship that exists between the two is called "mutualism."  Mutualism means that both parties (the ant and the peony) derive mutual benefits from the relationship. The ants get to nourish themselves with the sugars and amino acids that are on the peony, and in return they protect the peony from other pests that could cause potential damage. People often think that the ants are necessary for the opening of the flower to occur, this is not the case. The flower will open with or without the hungry ants. I challenge you to sit and observe nature to see what other relationships like this you can find.
